I recently spent a very interesting day in Columbus, Ohio, meeting staff members from the Ohio Humanities Council and the other presenters who will be doing historical interpretation at the Chautauqua Festival in June. What an inspiring group they are! The theme of the festival is “The Right to Vote,” so Susan B. Anthony fits right in. Also present were Frederick Douglass, Alice Paul, Paul Robeson and (new to me) Coralie Franklin Cook. If any of these names are unfamiliar to you, they shouldn’t be, so go look them up! Better yet, plan on attending the festival, which runs from June 7 – 21. The first week will be in the Toledo area and the second week in Westerville, just outside of Columbus. A complete schedule should be available soon at ohiohumanities.org. That fellow playing Paul Robeson has a beautiful voice, as does Coralie Cook. I wish I could sing well enough to include some music in Miss Anthony’s presentation, but she never went in much for singing anyway. I’ll just have to rely on good, old-fashioned oratory to get my listeners fired up!
